How to Clean Your Gutters

While you may not notice or think about your gutters every time you’re outside of your house, they actually play a major role in your home’s wellbeing. As a homeowner, you should take the time to regularly clean your gutters to ensure they can protect your home as efficiently as possible.

Learning how to properly clean your gutters is an important step towards maximizing your house’s condition and stability. Here’s a quick guide to cleaning your gutters and the importance of consistent gutter maintenance.

Why You Should Clean Your Gutters

Consistently cleaning your gutters is critical to maintaining your house’s sturdy foundation. Gutters are responsible for guiding water away from your home in times of rain and melting snow. By effectively guiding water away, your gutters are protecting your home’s foundation, roof, walls, and landscape from water damage.

Throughout the year, your gutters may accumulate dirt, twigs, leaves, and other debris that causes the system to become clogged. When your gutters aren’t able to properly transport water away from your home, the clogged system may result in mold growth, sagging gutters, roof leaks, and foundation deterioration.

By taking the time to clean your gutters twice a year, you can prevent your gutter system and home from requiring repair from debris buildup and water damage. How to Clean Your Gutters

You should aim to clean your gutters twice a year — once in the fall and once in the spring. These are ideal seasons for gutter cleaning as these times give you the opportunity to remove any fallen leaves, twigs, and debris that’s stacked up in the system.

Utilize garden shovels and gardening gloves to make your cleaning easy and fast. Place a ladder at the start of your gutters and use caution to climb up just enough to be able to reach your gutters.

Using your gardening shovel or your own hands, scoop all of the collected leaves and debris from the gutters. Place all of the debris you collect into a bucket for easy cleaning. Once you’ve successfully cleaned the section in front of you, carefully descend from your ladder and move it down the system. Remember to not try and reach further down the system than what your ladder permits you to reach. This can result in a loss of balance and critical injury.

Once you’ve efficiently removed all of the debris fro your gutter system, use a hose to flush out any remaining pieces from your gutter system. You should see a stream exiting from your downspout when you spray your hose down the system. If you’re noticing the stream is particularly weak, or if there’s no water exiting from the downspout at all, you may need to revisit certain areas of the gutters to locate debris buildup.

Once your gutters are sufficiently cleaned out and water is able to run through the system with no issue, you can dispose of the collected debris. Remember to repeat the cleaning process before winter or summer conditions go into effect.

Keep an Eye Out for Gutter Damage

As you clean your gutters, be sure to watch for signs of damage. Common signs of gutter damage include cracking, splitting, and sagging. If you notice a part of your gutter system is broken, contact a professional team of contractors as soon as possible.
